It has been an incredibly long time since I have posted to my blog. Yes I have been busy going through our annual financial review but the primary reason is there hasn’t been anything that has really pissed me off enough to talk about.
I will admit, part of the reason I have been so calm is I have avoided the standard things that have made me angry over time. It has been a long time since I have read something by Vaughn Palmer or Michael Smyth. I flip the pages when I come across an article by Cam Cole, Ed Willes and especially Tony Gallagher. I change the channel on the radio at the mere mention of Dave Pratt. As a result, for the past little while, I have been living an idyllic life.
That came to a crashing halt this morning. As I was getting a coffee in our office kitchen, the Vancouver Province was on the counter and the back page is a big photo of Roberto Luongo with the headline “Tony Gallagher asks: Are ya done being a Diva?” Well, there goes the blood pressure!
Against all better judgement, I read the article by Gallagher and once again Tony shows us how much of a moron he truly is. He refers to the amount of money Luongo makes in almost every paragraph. Tony clearly believes that somebody who makes that much money is not human and must cow tow to all the mental midgets in the press.
Tony Gallagher equates not talking to the press over the summer as being a Diva. That is the only thing he states that Luongo has done wrong. He didn’t talk to the local press over the summer. I suspect it has been about 3 years since the local press had anything good to say about Luongo so why should he talk to them if he doesn’t have to?
The entire Gallagher article is a fantasy in his head. Other than stating that Luongo hasn’t talked to the media and team officials have met with him over the summer, there is not one shred of fact in this article, just a bunch of delusional opinions and uninformed speculation.
Here is what I think. I think Luongo and the team have been fine all summer. I think Luongo is totally engaged and ready to play for the Vancouver Canucks. I think Luongo has made that clear to the GM, the Coach and his teammates. I think that none of the aforementioned Canucks think Luongo is a diva. I think that is all that really matters. I think that Tony’s (and all of the local media) feelings are hurt that Luongo has no freaking desire to talk to them unless he has to.
I THINK I DON’T BLAME HIM!
Even some of the fringe sports guys are taking up the cause. Cam Charron (@CamCharron) is a local sports blogger who tends to focus on stats and facts as opposed to opinion…although as he gains some mainstream traction, he is starting to shift to the dark side….came out this morning with criticism of the Gallagher article. And recently Charron tweeted the following:
The way the Vancouver media have handled Luongo wouldn’t bug me so much if fans didn’t actually believe the hearsay http://www.robthehockeyguy.com/2013/08/23/dont-cry-for-roberto-luongo/ …
He hits the nail right on the head. There are crazy people in this market that actually think guys like Gallagher have some magic insight into the world of sport when they actually get paid for knowing far less than you and I. I have no idea who robthehockeyguy is but he is bucking for a job with the big dailies by throwing out conjecture as fact and showing how much he truly doesn’t know.
My quiet world has come crashing down so I might start looking for things to talk about. On the 50th anniversary of the famous “I have a dream” speech by Martin Luther King Jr, we have curfews in Egypt, world-wide tension as a result of civil unrest in Syria, the Jewish people of BC considering suing Translink over an ad campaign by a Palestinian organization and the Russians outlawing the promotion of the gay lifestyle.
Somehow I doubt this is the dream that the Reverend King had in mind…..but that is a discussion for a different day.
